LAGOS Island Maternity Hospital is situated on Campbell Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State. It is a government hospital established to provide tertiary level specialist healthcare services to the people of Lagos State and indeed all Nigerians in the area of obstetrics and gynaecology.

The Hospital has a rich history and tradition of being the place of birth of several prominent Nigerians including the present Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), past governors, traditional rulers and prominent Nigerians.

No wonder it is called:

THE BABY FACTORY OF AFRICA.

As an organ of Lagos State Government, the hospital is mandated to provide 24 hours un-interrupted maternity and gynaecological services to the citizens of Lagos particularly, and other persons that may so wish to access its services.

The Library

It is well equipped with standard obstetrics and gynaecological books and Journals. The residents also make use of the library of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

There are four units in the hospital and each is headed by the most Senior Consultant. The typical activities consist of antenatal clinic, Gynaecology clinics, family planning clinics, emergency unit coverage and theatre/cal on different days of the week. There are also daily resident ward rounds and a special day for Consultant teaching round.

 

The obstetrics and gynaecology units within the hospital were in 2014 divided into sub-specialities to provide a compre

hensive form of training for the residents. These are

  • Minimal Access Surgery Unit –  Omololu
  • Feto-maternal Medicine Unit – Bazuaye

 

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

Regular academic programmes are held to ensure proper training. These include

  • A weekly scientific meeting
  • A daily morning review of all cases admitted during the previous day’s call
  • A monthly maternal and perinatal mortality meeting
  • Consultants teaching ward rounds
  • Regular assessment tests, multiple choice questions and essays are held for continuous assessment

Confirmed pregnancy This Clinic opens Monday to Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. You can expect:- Registration in the hospital at Health Information Centre (records) within 30mins.Assessment by a nurse midwife within 15mins.Counseling and voluntary test of clients for HIV , early detection and institution of treatment- 30mins– An appointment for antenatal clinic a week after completing relevant investigations and donation of a pint of blood by the spouse or a fit relative.
